REVIEW - Saturday 29th June 2002 - Duruflé Requiem

CHOIR CONTINUES ITS SUCCESS

Once again on Saturday, Gravesham Choral Society delivered a concert of the highest quality to draw their 2001/02 season to a close. The large audience at St George's Church were treated to a wide range of French and English music from a choir of which the Gravesham area can be justly proud.

The programme included Fauré's popular 'Cantique de Jean Racine', three Motets by Stanford and Duruflé's Requiem. All were sung with sensitivity and careful attention to the varying dynamics and were greeted with lengthy applause.

Marking the 150th anniversary of his birth, Stanford featured again in the organ solo played by Geoffrey Lester. This proved to be a very busy evening for Geoffrey who, in addition to supporting the choir, accompanied the mezzo soprano soloist, Dawn Foxall. Her solos by Bach, Fauré and Mozart were sung entirely from memory and the audience clearly enjoyed the power and range of her voice.

This is an opportunity to pay tribute to all the members of the Society who have contributed to the success of this concert season: a considerable amount of hard work goes on behind the scenes in so many unseen ways - and it is appreciated. However, the Society's main purpose is to make music and the major praise therefore goes to the conductor, Alan Vincent, and rehearsal accompanist, Roger Harris. Their musical skill and humour have made the preparation for the concerts rewarding and enjoyable.

The new season's concerts begin on 16th November with a programme that includes John Rutter's Requiem; rehearsals start on Wednesday, 4th September at Chantry School. For more information, please visit the website www.graveshamcs.co.uk
