REVIEW - Saturday 1st February 2003 - 'Instant' Haydn "Nelson" Mass

GRAVESHAM'S INSTANT HIT

Gravesham Choral Society held its annual "Instant" concert on Saturday at the Methodist Church in Gravesend. Once again, it proved to be an enjoyable and successful event with over 120 singers from a number of Kent and Essex choral societies coming together for an afternoon's rehearsals and a short evening concert. A select but appreciative audience also braved the arctic conditions outside and were treated initially to Mozart's Exsultate Jubilate, sung movingly by soprano Claire Graydon-James, accompanied by Geoffrey Lester at the organ. The choir were then joined by three other soloists, Elizabeth Jenkins [alto], David Clark [tenor] and John Harding [bass] in an accomplished and enthusiastic performance of Haydn's 'Nelson' Mass.

The event has three main purposes: serious music-making, developing friendships with other musicians and raising much-needed funds. All three objectives were achieved in a highly convivial atmosphere, sustained throughout by the conductor, Alan Vincent, with his musical insights and amusing remarks.

A special thank you to Muriel Stubbs for her organisation of the event and to the backroom team who co-ordinated the feeding of the 'masses' between the rehearsals and the concert.
