THE CRUCIFIXION
ST GEORGE’S CHURCH, 7.30PM
Gravesham Choral, together with organist and soloists, will be performing the followng programme this evening:
SS Wesley Ascribe unto the Lord
Gerald Finzi Lo, the full, final sacrifice
Interval
John Stainer The Crucifixion
with organist Malcolm Riley, tenor David Booer and bass Greg Bannan
conducted by Francesca Massey
On the eve of Holy Week, our performance tonight centres around John Stainer’s The Crucifixion: a devotional account of the Passion story, which has become a staple for choirs across the country since its first performance in 1887, due in large part to its tuneful accessibility. Alongside this, we will showcase two contrasting anthems which are fine examples of the Anglican choral tradition. Wesley’s Ascribe unto the Lord is a grand and dramatic work, showing off the power of the full choir and organ, whilst Finzi’s highly moving and expressive Lo, the full, final sacrifice contains beautiful melodies which will both soothe and inspire as we reflect on the events of the Easter season.
